Chapter 2 - The Perfect Mask

I forced myself to walk out of the bedroom and look down the stairs.
Grant was standing in the foyer with a bouquet of my favorite white roses.
His smile was flawless, warm, and entirely fake.
“Just a little surprise for my beautiful bride,” he said.
I gripped the wooden banister tightly to stop my hands from shaking.
“They are gorgeous, thank you,” I lied.
He walked up the stairs and pulled me into a tight embrace.
I had to force my body not to pull away from his touch.
He smelled like his expensive cologne and the deceit he was hiding.
“Are the kids home yet?” he asked, casually glancing toward Caleb’s room.
“Not yet, they are still at soccer practice,” I replied.
He kissed my forehead, acting like the perfect, loving father figure he had pretended to be for years.
“Good, that gives us time to relax before the weekend chaos begins,” he smiled.
I watched him walk into the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
My mind was racing with a million different ways to confront him right there.
I wanted to scream, throw the roses at him, and kick him out of my house.
But if I did that, he would know I was onto him before my assets were truly secure.
I needed to buy time to protect my children and my life’s work.
“I’m going to take a quick shower before dinner,” Grant called out.
“Take your time,” I answered cheerfully.
As soon as I heard the bathroom door lock and the water running, I sprinted to his home office.
I opened his laptop, praying he hadn’t changed his password.
He hadn’t.
I quickly dug through his email folders and downloaded bank statements.
What I found was far worse than a few hidden credit cards.
Grant was over four hundred thousand dollars in debt to private, dangerous lenders.
He had been using his mother’s address to hide the collection notices.
I took photos of every single document with my phone.
The shower turned off abruptly down the hall.
I carefully closed the laptop and placed it exactly where I found it.
I rushed back into the hallway just as the bathroom door opened.

Grant stood there with a towel around his waist, looking at me with a strange expression.
“What were you doing in my office, Mara?” he asked, his voice suddenly dropping its friendly tone.
