Chapter 4 - The Inside Man

I stared at the financial document in Rebecca’s hand in absolute disbelief.

“Who authorized this transfer?” I demanded, my voice shaking with rage.

Rebecca pointed to a digital signature at the bottom of the page.

It was David, my senior accountant and a man I had trusted for five years.

Grant had somehow manipulated or bribed David into siphoning funds from my company’s reserve accounts.

“The transfer is pending, but it clears in twenty-four hours,” Rebecca warned.

“Can you stop it?” I asked frantically.

“I can freeze the company accounts entirely, but David will instantly get an alert,” she explained.

If David got an alert, he would immediately call Grant.

Grant would know the game was up before I could humiliate him at the wedding.

“Freeze it anyway,” I decided instantly.

“I am not letting them steal my hard-earned money just to save a dramatic moment.”

Rebecca typed rapidly on her keyboard, initiating the emergency financial lockdown protocols.

I left her office and drove directly to my architecture firm.

I walked through the glass doors, acting as though nothing was wrong.

David was sitting at his desk, typing away with a completely relaxed expression.

I felt physically sick looking at the man who was actively trying to ruin my life.

I walked into my private office and closed the blinds.

I needed to stay out of sight until the end of the day.

Ten minutes later, my office phone rang.

It was the front desk receptionist.

“Mara, Grant is here to see you,” she said brightly.

My stomach plummeted.

He never visited me at work, especially not two days before our wedding.

Before I could tell her to send him away, my office door swung open.

Grant walked in, holding a thick stack of legal documents and a pen.

He wasn’t alone.

He had brought a public notary with him.

“Hey darling,” Grant said, his smile looking predatory in the fluorescent light.

“I know you’re busy, but we really need to get this property agreement signed right now.”
