Chapter 7 - The Final Morning

I hugged Caleb fiercely, promising him that no one was going anywhere.
I told him I had a plan, and I just needed him to trust me for one more day.
He nodded, his young eyes full of a maturity he shouldn’t have needed yet.
The next morning, the sun rose brightly on what was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
My house was filled with hairstylists, makeup artists, and the chaotic energy of a wedding morning.
I sat perfectly still while they pinned my hair up and applied my makeup.
I felt absolutely nothing but a cold, hard resolve.
Maisie and June ran into the room, twirling in their adorable green flower-girl dresses.
“You look like a princess, Aunt Mara!” June giggled.
I smiled genuinely for the first time in two days.
They were the reason I was doing this.
I was protecting my kingdom from the thieves who tried to conquer it.
I stepped into my white wedding dress, the heavy silk falling perfectly around my waist.
It was time to go to the venue.
We arrived at the beautiful, rustic reception barn that was decorated exactly how I had dreamed.
Guests were already taking their seats in the wooden chairs set up on the lawn.
Caleb walked into the bridal suite wearing his sharp navy blue suit.
He looked so grown up, and my heart swelled with immense pride.
“It’s time, Mom,” he said, offering me his small, sturdy arm.
“Are you scared?” he whispered as we lined up behind the wooden doors.
“Yes,” I answered honestly.
“Good,” Caleb replied.
I looked down at him in surprise.
He shrugged his shoulders casually.
“You always tell me courage isn’t not being scared, it’s doing it anyway.”
I squeezed his arm, ready to burn my own wedding to the ground.
The doors opened, and the beautiful acoustic music began to play.
We started walking down the aisle, and I locked eyes with Grant standing at the altar.
But right before I reached the front, David stepped out from the front row.

My corrupt accountant quickly handed Grant a thin yellow envelope.
Grant peeked inside, saw a certified bank document, and smiled directly at me with absolute victory.
