Chapter 1 - The Hidden Protocol

Malcolm Reyes stood perfectly still in the sterile hospital corridor while staring directly at my abusive parents.

He did not raise his voice when he addressed my mother.

He simply adjusted his expensive suit jacket and stared at her with complete, unyielding authority.

"You are standing outside the room of the primary shareholder of this entire medical network," Malcolm said with a deadly calm voice.

My mother's smug, victorious smile completely vanished from her heavily powdered face in a single instant.

My father dropped his leather folder in shock as if the forged documents had suddenly caught fire in his hands.

They never knew that my late husband, Richard, had secretly purchased a controlling stake in this hospital just weeks before his fatal car accident.

They simply assumed I was just a grieving, vulnerable widow who would be incredibly easy to manipulate and control.

Malcolm stepped directly between my furious parents and the reinforced glass door of my recovery room.

"The moment you submitted those fraudulent psychiatric papers to our system, an automatic federal alert was instantly triggered," he explained coldly.

My father's face turned completely pale as he suddenly realized the massive magnitude of his legal mistake.

"This is just a simple family misunderstanding," my father stammered while taking a slow, nervous step backward toward the elevators.

Nurse Mara did not hesitate to reach out and press another heavy red button on her wall console to physically lock down the entire maternity ward.

Heavy steel security doors instantly began to slide shut at the far ends of the long, brightly lit hallway.

My mother suddenly lunged forward like a wild animal and slammed her fists aggressively against the reinforced glass of my door.

"You cannot keep me away from my own blood," she screamed with absolute, terrifying fury.

Inside the room, I pulled my newborn daughter closer to my chest and finally breathed a sigh of temporary relief.

I truly thought the horrific nightmare was finally over and that my parents were going directly to federal prison.

But then the hospital's loud emergency sirens suddenly went completely silent.

The heavy steel security doors instantly stopped closing halfway and slowly reversed their automated tracks with a mechanical hiss.

The bright fluorescent hallway lights flickered twice before shutting off entirely, plunging the ward into deep darkness.

Red emergency backup bulbs flickered to life, bathing the entire maternity ward in a terrifying, bloody glow.

Malcolm pulled a small radio from his belt and demanded an immediate status report from the central security desk.

A harsh, static-filled voice replied that all central systems had just been manually overridden from the basement server room.

My father smiled wickedly in the red light and pulled a dark metallic object from his tailored jacket pocket.

"I told you this did not need to get ugly, Trisha," my father said as he aimed a heavy, suppressed pistol directly at Malcolm's chest.
