Chapter 4 - The Assassin in the Ballroom

The deafening crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the massive ballroom.

Screams erupted from the wealthy guests as they scrambled wildly for cover under the expensive tables.

A heavy bullet buried itself into the exact spot where Julian’s chest had been a fraction of a second earlier.

I stayed low to the ground, shielding Julian with my own body while scanning the chaotic room.

I noticed a waiter in a crisp white uniform moving far too calmly through the screaming crowd.

The waiter dropped his silver tray, reached into his jacket, and pulled out a suppressed handgun.

He aimed the weapon directly at Sarah, who was frozen in shock near the wedding cake.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I launched myself across the slick marble floor, tackling the fake waiter at the knees.

We crashed heavily into a champagne tower, sending hundreds of glass flutes shattering over us.

The assassin tried to swing his gun toward my head, but I grabbed his wrist and applied a brutal military joint lock.

The bone snapped with a sickening crunch, and the gun slid harmlessly across the wet floor.

I pinned his throat to the ground with my forearm, demanding to know who hired him.

The assassin choked on his own blood, smiled a terrifying smile, and whispered two words.

He told me the order came directly from The Trident.

Before I could interrogate him further, my father's private security team swarmed us.

They forcefully dragged me off the assassin, ignoring my direct orders to stand down.

Conrad Voss marched over, looking absolutely furious that his perfect evening was ruined.

He ordered his men to take the assassin to the basement for private questioning before the police arrived.

I demanded he turn the man over to federal authorities immediately.

Conrad simply laughed and told me I had no jurisdiction inside his private hotel.

His guards dragged the injured assassin out the side doors and into the dark service hallway.

Less than ten seconds later, I heard the distinct, muffled sound of a silenced gunshot echoing from that exact hallway.

My father hadn't ordered his men to interrogate the assassin.

He had ordered them to execute the man to keep him from talking to me.
