Chapter 3 - The Price of a Son

The grocery store aisle went completely silent.
The pregnant woman clutched her stomach in sheer terror.
She demanded to know what Julian meant by that.
Evelyn stepped in front of the woman, shielding her.
Evelyn hissed that Julian was a pathological liar who had been disowned for his mental instability.
Julian let out a bitter, hollow laugh.
He said he was disowned because he found out what Evelyn does to children who threaten her power.
I squeezed Lily tighter against my chest.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I asked Julian to explain what he was talking about.
Julian looked at me with deep sorrow in his eyes.
He said Evelyn didn't hate Lily just because she was a girl.
He explained that according to their grandfather's will, the firstborn grandchild inherited the entire Whitaker corporate voting block.
Gender did not matter at all.
Daniel's eyes widened in genuine shock.
He looked at his mother and asked if that was true.
Evelyn refused to look at him.
Julian continued speaking.
He said Evelyn needed a male heir she could control, so she convinced Daniel to abandon me.
He revealed that Evelyn had been poisoning my hospital food to ensure I wouldn't survive the birth.
My knees went weak.
I remembered the violently agonizing stomach pains I suffered during my recovery.
I had blamed it on the stress of the emergency C-section.
Daniel backed away from his mother in horror.
The pregnant woman began to sob hysterically.
She pulled a set of car keys from her designer purse.
She declared she was leaving and calling her lawyer.
Evelyn moved with terrifying speed.
She grabbed the woman's wrist with a crushing grip.

Evelyn coldly stated that nobody was going anywhere until she got the flash drive.
She reached into her oversized coat and pulled out a silver handgun.
