Chapter 1 - The Aisle of Secrets

I tightened my grip on the worn strap of my purse.

The heavy leather pressed against my side.

Inside the hidden pocket rested a small black flash drive.

It was the very drive that contained the offshore bank records Evelyn Whitaker had hidden for decades.

Daniel took a hesitant step forward.

His eyes darted from my face to the little girl resting on my hip.

Lily babbled happily, completely unaware of the monsters standing in front of her.

The woman beside Daniel placed a manicured hand on his arm.

Her enormous diamond engagement ring caught the harsh fluorescent lights of the grocery store.

She looked at me with a mixture of confusion and polite disgust.

She asked Daniel who I was.

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Evelyn pushed her cart closer, her designer heels clicking against the linoleum floor.

She wore the same smug expression she had the night she banished me from their lives.

Evelyn told the pregnant woman that I was just an old mistake.

She claimed I was a desperate woman who tried to trap her son with a useless daughter.

My blood boiled, but I forced my face to remain completely calm.

I was no longer the weeping, exhausted mother they had abandoned in a hospital room.

I looked directly at the pregnant woman and smiled.

I introduced myself as Daniel's wife.

The woman gasped and pulled her hand away from Daniel's arm.

She asked him what I was talking about.

Daniel stammered, insisting that the divorce papers were already filed.

I reached into my purse and let my fingers brush against the flash drive.

I told them the divorce was never finalized because Daniel hid all of his assets.

Evelyn's fake smile vanished instantly.

She stepped forward and ordered me to leave before she called the police.

I leaned in close so only the three of them could hear me.

I whispered that if I left, the fraud investigation unit at the IRS would receive a very interesting email in exactly ten minutes.

Evelyn's face turned completely pale.

Daniel lunged forward and grabbed my wrist.

May you like

He demanded to know what I had done.

Before I could answer, a tall man in a dark suit stepped out from the next aisle and grabbed Daniel's throat.
