Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal

A loudspeaker echoed through the pouring rain.
A voice ordered us to drop our weapons and put our hands in the air.
I squinted against the glaring light.
I could make out the shapes of heavily armed police snipers on the adjacent building.
Below us, the street was swarming with flashing red and blue lights.
Julian let out a triumphant shout.
He told me the file upload was successful.
He said the police were here to raid Evelyn's corporate headquarters.
I felt a massive wave of relief wash over my exhausted body.
I lowered the gun and placed it on the wet concrete.
I hugged Lily, whispering that the nightmare was finally over.
Daniel fell to his knees in the puddles, covering his face with his hands.
The rooftop door burst open behind us.
A team of SWAT officers flooded the roof with their weapons drawn.
I raised my hands, fully prepared to explain the situation to the authorities.
I waited for them to arrest Daniel.
Instead, two officers rushed past him and grabbed my arms.
They wrenched my hands behind my back and slammed me against the brick wall.
The cold metal of handcuffs snapped tightly around my wrists.
I screamed, asking what they were doing.
The lead officer read me my Miranda rights.
He stated I was being placed under arrest for the kidnapping of Lily Grace Whitaker.
I struggled wildly, screaming that Lily was my daughter.
A figure emerged from the stairwell behind the police.
It was Evelyn, looking completely unbothered and perfectly composed.
She walked over to the officers and gently took a crying Lily from my arms.
Evelyn thanked the police for saving her granddaughter from a deranged woman.
I looked at Julian, screaming for him to tell them the truth.
Julian slowly put his hands in his pockets.
He looked at me with a cold, terrifying smile.

He walked over to Evelyn and handed her the real flash drive he had never actually uploaded.
He looked me in the eyes and said he always hated Daniel, but he would never betray his own mother.
