Chapter 4 - The Fake Identity

I stood perfectly still, instinctively shielding Sarah and Lily behind my body.

The men invading my home wore no police insignia, only solid black uniforms and terrifying ballistic face masks.

"Give us the asset right now, and the rest of you can live," the lead gunman said, his voice completely devoid of any human emotion.

I knew instantly that he was talking about the little girl trapped inside the walls.

"I don't know what you are talking about, there is nobody else here," I lied smoothly, raising my hands in a gesture of surrender.

The gunman scoffed a cold laugh and raised his rifle, aiming the glowing red laser sight directly at my chest.

Before his finger could pull the trigger, Sarah quickly reached beneath the marble kitchen counter.

She pulled a hidden, metallic lever that I never even knew existed in our custom-built kitchen.

The massive kitchen island suddenly shifted on hidden tracks, dropping a heavy steel blast door perfectly over the hallway archway.

Deafening bullets sparked against the thick metal as the gunmen opened fire, but they could not penetrate the reinforced steel.

"Follow me right now!" Sarah shouted, pushing open a hidden, sliding panel completely concealed behind the pantry shelves.

We rushed into a narrow, dark corridor built directly between the walls of our suburban home.

"You built secret safe rooms in my house without ever telling me?" I demanded furiously as we ran through the suffocating dust.

"I bought this house under a fake shell company before we even met," Sarah replied, clicking on a heavy tactical flashlight.

"My real name is not Sarah, and I am certainly not a marketing executive."

I stopped running in the dark, grabbing her shoulder to force her to turn around and look at me.

"Who are you, and why do you have my dead fiancée's secret child hidden in my walls?" I asked, my blood boiling.

Sarah took a deep, shaky breath, her eyes shining with unshed tears in the flashlight beam.

"I am a highly trained private intelligence contractor," she explained rapidly, her voice echoing in the tight space.

"Your father hired me to track down Chloe six years ago because he wanted absolute full custody of your unborn heir."

My wealthy, completely estranged father had always hated Chloe, considering her common blood unworthy of our prestigious family legacy.

"He caused the car crash to fake Chloe's death and steal the baby for himself," Sarah continued grimly.

"But I stole the baby from his private facility to protect her, and I married you just to keep a close watch on his next moves."

I felt my entire world collapse into a massive, suffocating pile of terrifying lies.

Before I could even process the ultimate betrayal of my marriage, the wooden floor beneath us began to violently shake.

The tactical gunmen were using heavy explosive breaching charges to blow straight through the steel blast door.
