Chapter 2 - The Girl in the Wall

I immediately threw my entire body weight against the bedroom door, but the solid wood would not budge.
Someone had intentionally locked Lily and me inside the room, trapping us together.
I spun back toward the open air vent, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Who is in there?" I demanded, shining my bright phone light directly back into the narrow hole.
The little girl flinched violently, shrinking back into the deep shadows of the wall cavity.
She looked to be about five or six years old, wearing a filthy, oversized gray t-shirt that hung loosely on her frail frame.
Her skin was deathly pale, smeared with thick dust, and her dark hair was matted in tight, dirty knots.
Lily tugged on my pajama sleeve, looking up at me with innocent, pleading eyes.
"Don't yell at her, Daddy, you are going to scare her away," Lily pleaded softly.
I dropped to my knees, taking a deep breath and trying my absolute best to keep my voice steady.
"It is okay, sweetheart, I promise I am not going to hurt you," I told the trembling girl hiding in the wall.
Slowly and hesitantly, she crawled forward into the warm beam of my flashlight.
She reached a tiny, trembling hand through the metal gap and grabbed a cold piece of chicken from the plate.
As she ravenously ate the food, she looked up directly into my eyes for the very first time.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice incredibly raspy from years of disuse.
"How long have you been hiding inside our house?" I asked, completely horrified by the nightmare unfolding in front of me.
The little girl tilted her head, looking at me with a strange, heartbreaking sense of recognition.
She wiped her dirty mouth with the back of her equally dirty hand.
Then, she said the single word that instantly shattered my entire reality into a million pieces.
"Daddy."
The flashlight slipped from my sweaty, trembling fingers, clattering loudly onto the hardwood floor.
I had no other children, and I had never seen this girl before in my entire life.
Before I could even begin to process what she had just called me, the large bedroom window shattered violently inward.

A heavy, black tactical canister was tossed through the broken glass, landing right at my bare feet.
Thick, gray smoke immediately began pouring out of the canister, filling the small room with blinding, choking tear gas.
