Chapter 6 - The Miracle

Elena woke up to the harsh glare of surgical lights.

The rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor echoed in her ears.

She turned her head and saw Dr. Evans, the mob's private underground physician, reading a chart.

"Welcome back to the land of the living, Mrs. Cross," the doctor said grimly.

"You ingested a very high dose of synthetic aconite."

"If you hadn't thrown most of it up on the rug, you would be entirely dead."

Elena touched her dry lips, her memory flooding back in terrifying pieces.

"The housekeeper poisoned Adrian's tea," she rasped.

Dr. Evans nodded, adjusting his glasses.

"Adrian’s men have already dealt with the housekeeper."

"But that is not the most alarming thing we discovered tonight."

The doctor walked to the edge of her bed, looking extremely uncomfortable.

"When I pumped your stomach, I had to run a complete comprehensive blood panel."

"I was looking for liver damage, but I found something else entirely."

Elena’s heart began to pound against her ribs.

"Am I dying?" she asked in a tiny voice.

Dr. Evans shook his head and handed her a thick medical printout.

"Mrs. Cross, your hormone levels are perfectly balanced."

"Your reproductive organs show absolutely no signs of scarring, disease, or defect."

"You are in perfect, peak biological condition."

Elena stared at the paper, unable to comprehend the words.

"But Dr. Mitchell told my father I was completely barren," she argued.

"He showed us the scans three years ago."

Dr. Evans sighed heavily and crossed his arms.

"Those scans must have belonged to another patient."

"Someone paid a fortune to convince your father that you were worthless."

"You are completely fertile, Elena."

May you like

The door to the clinic suddenly swung open, hitting the wall with a loud bang.

Adrian stood in the doorway, covered in fresh blood, looking at her with a wild, desperate expression.
