Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Adrian returned to the estate with an army of furious men.

He locked the massive iron gates and put the entire property on high alert.

He pulled Elena into his private study, his dark eyes blazing with barely controlled rage.

"Your father sent a hit squad to murder you," Adrian growled, pouring a glass of whiskey.

"Why would Richard try to kill the daughter he just sold?"

Elena sat on the leather sofa, her hands still shaking from the adrenaline.

"Before he sold me, he forced me to sign a massive life insurance policy," she whispered.

"He named his failing logistics company as the sole beneficiary."

Adrian threw his crystal glass against the brick fireplace, shattering it into a hundred pieces.

"He realized the three million I paid him wasn't enough to save his empire."

"He wants the ten million from your death."

Adrian walked over and knelt in front of her, his hands surprisingly gentle on her knees.

"I promised to protect you, Elena."

"I am going to completely dismantle your father's life tonight."

For the first time in her entire life, Elena felt truly protected by a man.

She nodded softly, allowing herself to lean against his broad chest.

Later that evening, she went upstairs to check on the children.

She found Mason sitting in the dark hallway, holding a small electronic device.

The teenage boy looked up at her, his eyes filled with a terrifying mixture of pity and disgust.

"You think my dad is the hero of this story, don't you?" Mason asked.

Elena frowned, stepping closer.

"What is that in your hand, Mason?"

Mason tossed the tiny black device onto the carpet at her feet.

"It's a military-grade audio transmitter," the boy replied coldly.

"I found it stitched into the lining of the winter coat my dad bought for you."
