Chapter 8 - The Fatal Shot

I raised the heavy pistol, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

Sebastian looked at me and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

He slipped his hand into his pocket and injected the paralytic drug into his thigh.

I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot echoed through the massive warehouse like a cannon blast.

Sebastian’s head snapped back, and he slumped violently forward in his wheelchair.

He fell onto the concrete floor, completely motionless.

Victor laughed loudly and walked over to Sebastian's lifeless body.

He kicked Sebastian in the ribs, but there was no response.

Victor knelt down and pressed two fingers against Sebastian's neck.

I held my breath, praying the drug had done its terrifying job.

Victor stood up and wiped his hands on his expensive suit.

"He is dead," Victor announced to his men.

He turned toward me with a wicked, satisfied grin.

"You actually did it, you desperate little civilian."

I lowered the gun and took a step toward my son.

"I fulfilled my end of the bargain," I said firmly.

"Give me Oliver right now."

Victor chuckled and gestured for his guards to let the boy go.

Oliver ran across the cold concrete and crashed into my arms.

I held him so tightly I thought my heart would burst with relief.

We turned to walk out of the warehouse, completely focused on the exit.

The heavy steel doors suddenly slammed shut with a deafening crash.

I spun around to see Victor raising his own weapon.

"You really think I leave loose ends, Clare?" Victor sneered.

He aimed the barrel directly at Oliver's head.

"You know too much, and the Lombardi era ends tonight."

He cocked the hammer of the gun.

Before he could pull the trigger, the warehouse skylight shattered inward.
