Chapter 3 - The Shadow Assassin

The sheer brutality on the security screens made my stomach churn.
"Who did this?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Sebastian quickly checked the magazine of his pistol.
"Doctor Vance is not working alone," he replied.
He explained that Vance was secretly funded by the Moretti family, his oldest rivals in the city.
The Morettis had finally realized that Sebastian was trying to walk again.
They had sent their best assassin to finish the job they started twenty years ago.
The lights in the penthouse suddenly flickered and died.
We were plunged into complete, terrifying darkness.
"Stay behind my chair," Sebastian ordered.
I crouched low, gripping the cold titanium frame of his wheelchair.
The massive glass windows overlooking the city shattered inward in a deadly explosion of shards.
A figure dressed entirely in black swung into the room on a tactical rope.
The assassin raised an automatic weapon and fired a burst of suppressed rounds into the dark.
Sebastian fired back with deadly precision.
The muzzle flashes illuminated the room in brief, violent bursts of yellow light.
I heard the assassin grunt in pain, taking a hit to the shoulder.
The intruder dropped a smoke grenade on the floor, filling the room with blinding gray fog.
Sebastian grabbed my wrist with his massive hand.
"Run to the private elevator," he commanded.
I pushed his heavy wheelchair through the thick smoke as fast as I could.
Bullets tore through the expensive furniture all around us.
We reached the hidden elevator tucked behind a false bookcase.
Sebastian swiped a biometric ring over the hidden scanner.
The steel doors slid open, and I shoved his chair inside.
I turned around just in time to see the assassin burst through the smoke.
The killer raised his weapon to fire at my head.
The elevator doors slammed shut just as the bullets sparked against the steel.
We plummeted downward in complete silence, our breath heavy in the dark cabin.
When we reached the underground garage, the doors opened to a terrifying sight.
Gabriel was lying on the concrete floor, bleeding heavily from a chest wound.
Standing over him was a man holding a bloody knife.

The man turned his head, and I felt my blood run absolutely cold.
The assassin working for the Moretti family was David, my abusive ex-husband.
