Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice
"Drop the gun, Clara, or I will paint this office with his brains," David screamed over the distant sound of gunfire.
My hands shook violently, but I slowly lowered my weapon and kicked it across the dirty linoleum floor.
"You have completely lost your mind, David," I whispered, holding my hands up in total surrender.
He laughed hysterically, his eyes wide and bloodshot from sheer terror and surging adrenaline.
"The Morettis promised me ten million dollars if I delivered Salvatore's head on a silver platter," David ranted wildly.
"But they never told me he would bring an entire army of heavily armed psychopaths to stop me!"
Leo looked up at me with huge, tear-filled eyes, completely paralyzed by the terrifying explosive vest on his chest.
"Let the boy go, David, and take me as your hostage instead," I pleaded, stepping slowly toward the center of the room.
"Dante will give you a private jet and endless millions if you just let his son walk away safely."
David hesitated for a fraction of a second, the pure greed in his heart warring against the overwhelming panic in his mind.
Suddenly, the glass walls of the office completely shattered inward in a blinding storm of debris.
Dante stepped through the broken window frame, covered in enemy blood and looking like a vengeful god of war.
David shrieked in absolute terror and pressed his thumb down hard on the red detonator switch.
"If you take one more step, Salvatore, the bomb goes off!" David screamed, his hand trembling uncontrollably.
Dante froze instantly, his dark eyes locking onto the blinking red lights strapped to his weeping son.
Without a single word of protest, the most feared mafia boss in the city dropped his weapons to the floor.
"Take my life, but let them both walk out of this room right now," Dante offered, his voice completely devoid of fear.

David smiled a sickening, victorious smile and aimed his gun squarely at Dante's chest.
"Goodbye, Boss," David whispered, slowly pulling the heavy metal trigger.
