Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

Alex was thrown violently into the back of a heavily armored police transport vehicle, his wrists bleeding from the tight steel cuffs.

The drive to the precinct was a silent, agonizing blur of flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet city streets.

He was dragged aggressively into a stark, windowless interrogation room and forcefully shoved into a hard metal chair.

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, leaving him completely alone in the bright, unforgiving fluorescent light.

He stared blankly at the two-way mirror, knowing perfectly well that the corrupt cops bought by Apex Dynamics were watching him.

After an hour of torturous silence, the door finally opened and a tall man in a cheap detective's suit walked in casually.

The man did not carry any standard police files or official recording equipment, only a steaming paper cup of black coffee.

He set the cheap cup down directly in front of Alex, offering a sickeningly polite smile that did not reach his dead eyes.

Alex immediately recognized the distinct, jagged scar on the man's neck from the security footage he had reviewed at his startup.

This man was not a real detective; he was Apex Dynamics' top corporate cleaner, completely embedded in the police force.

The cleaner sat down slowly, casually explaining that suicide by poisoning was a very common tragedy for guilty, desperate bombers.

He slid the steaming cup of poisoned coffee closer to Alex, urging him to drink it and permanently end his suffering.

Alex firmly refused to touch the deadly liquid, demanding to use his legally mandated phone call to contact a lawyer.

The cleaner simply laughed, pulling a sleek, advanced smartwatch out of his pocket and sliding it across the metal table.

It was the exact same custom watch Alex had bought for his sister's sixteenth birthday just last month.

The digital screen was currently displaying a live feed of Mia's personal heart rate monitor, which she always wore for her medical condition.

The cleaner coldly warned that if Alex did not drink the poison right now, the men guarding Mia would end her life immediately.

Alex felt hot tears stinging his eyes as he slowly wrapped his trembling fingers around the warm paper cup.

He raised the toxic coffee to his lips, ready to sacrifice his own life to save his innocent sister.

Suddenly, the green line on the smartwatch screen beeped rapidly and completely flatlined, dropping straight to zero.
