Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Machine

Alex stared down the barrel of the gun, his brilliant mind racing desperately for any possible way out of this nightmare.

He knew Sarah was completely ruthless in business, but he never imagined she would willingly become a murderer for a higher payout.

She demanded that he hand over his laptop so she could personally verify that all local backups of the algorithm were deleted.

Alex slowly reached into his soaked backpack, his fingers brushing against the cold metal casing of his computer.

He deliberately stalled, asking her what Apex Dynamics really intended to do with an algorithm designed for optimizing delivery routes.

Sarah laughed mockingly, explaining that the code was never going to be used for commercial delivery trucks.

Apex Dynamics was a shadow contractor for a rogue military faction, and they were using his software to control an untraceable swarm of armed drones.

His routing algorithm was exactly what they needed to bypass global defense radars and execute coordinated, undetectable assassinations.

Alex felt sick to his stomach, realizing his innocent college project was about to spark a global, catastrophic war.

He pulled the laptop out and slowly handed it to her, but he kept his thumb firmly pressed against the biometric fingerprint scanner.

The computer instantly woke up, quietly triggering a hidden, aggressive security protocol he had installed years ago.

Sarah's smartwatch suddenly started vibrating violently on her wrist, blasting a piercing, high-decibel alarm.

She instinctively glanced down at her wrist in sudden annoyance, lowering the heavy gun for a fraction of a second.

Alex lunged forward with everything he had, knocking the weapon out of her hand and shoving her hard against the brick fireplace.

He grabbed his laptop from the floor and bolted out the back door, disappearing into the dark, wooded area behind her house.

He ran blindly through the wet forest for hours until he finally found an abandoned, rusty hunting cabin hidden in the trees.

He sat on the dusty wooden floor, cracked open his laptop, and connected to an untraceable satellite network.

He systematically hacked into the Apex Dynamics mainframe using a secret backdoor he had cleverly buried deep inside his original code.

He watched in absolute horror as the encrypted server logs populated his screen with highly classified military targets.

The drone swarm was already fully armed, deployed, and flying toward their targets.

The final countdown timer on his screen indicated the first global strike would happen in exactly forty-five minutes.
