Chapter 7 - The Cloud Server

Ms. Davis grabbed Nolan tightly by the arm and yanked him fiercely behind a heavy oak bookshelf.

A silenced bullet shattered the computer monitor they had been looking at just seconds before.

The entire library erupted into screaming panic as late-night patrons scrambled desperately for the exits.

Ms. Davis pulled a small, silver USB drive from the ruined computer tower.

She whispered quickly that she had managed to download the encrypted server logs just in time.

They crawled desperately on their hands and knees through the dusty aisles of historical biographies.

The men in dark suits spread out, searching the aisles with cold, military-like precision.

Nolan noticed a heavy metal maintenance door located near the back emergency exit.

He threw a massive, heavy dictionary across the room to create a loud, sudden distraction.

The highly trained fixers instantly turned their weapons toward the sudden crashing noise.

Nolan and Ms. Davis sprinted into the maintenance stairwell and locked the heavy door behind them.

They ran up three exhausting flights of concrete stairs to the library's deserted rooftop.

The freezing rain soaked them immediately as they hid securely behind a massive HVAC unit.

Ms. Davis plugged the silver USB drive into her personal, battery-powered laptop.

She typed furiously, running a complex decryption program on the stolen administrative files.

She gasped loudly as the hidden documents finally opened on her glowing screen.

The file did not just contain the deleted video of the torn history test.

It contained thousands of emails between Principal Hale and prominent, wealthy city politicians.

They were selling valedictorian spots and college recommendations to the highest bidders in the state.

This massive scandal was big enough to completely ruin dozens of incredibly powerful careers.

Nolan realized this was exactly why they were willing to murder two high school students.

The metal door to the rooftop suddenly burst open with a loud, terrifying metallic screech.

The three fixers stepped out into the pouring rain, raising their deadly weapons in unison.

There was absolutely nowhere left for Nolan and Ms. Davis to run on the flat roof.

The lead fixer smiled coldly and demanded they hand over the laptop immediately.

Suddenly, a blinding, incredibly bright spotlight from a police helicopter illuminated the entire rooftop.

A booming voice over a megaphone ordered the men in suits to drop their weapons instantly.

Nolan looked down at the street and saw dozens of flashing squad cars completely surrounding the building.

The police had not come to arrest the heavily armed men.

The voice on the megaphone ordered the officers to shoot Nolan on sight for being a dangerous terrorist.
