Chapter 3 - The Head of Security

Maya stared at the birth certificate in complete disbelief.

She was not a random assistant hired out of a temp agency three years ago.

She was the direct biological heir to the largest financial empire in the country.

Everything Isabella had ever claimed to own actually belonged to her.

A violent pounding on the closet door shattered her realization.

"Open this door right now, Maya!" a deep, threatening voice shouted from the hallway.

The heavy metal door began to buckle under the force of a battering ram.

Maya shoved the birth certificate and the black key card deep into her jacket pocket.

She grabbed a heavy red fire extinguisher from the wall mount and waited.

The door flew open, revealing one of Isabella's armed mercenaries.

Maya swung the heavy steel cylinder with all her strength, striking the man directly in the face.

He collapsed backward into the hallway, dropping his assault rifle on the floor.

Maya leaped over his unconscious body and sprinted down the corridor toward the emergency exit.

She burst out into the airport parking garage, desperate to find a place to hide.

Tires screeched on the concrete as a massive black SUV aggressively blocked her path.

The tinted window rolled down, revealing the cold face of Carter, Isabella's head of security.

"Get in the car if you want to live to see tomorrow," Carter ordered sharply.

Maya hesitated, knowing this man had enforced Isabella's cruel rules for years.

"They have orders to shoot you on sight, and you cannot outrun them on foot," Carter warned.

Maya heard the shouts of more mercenaries echoing from the terminal doors behind her.

She ripped open the passenger door and threw herself into the leather seat.

Carter slammed on the gas, sending the heavy vehicle speeding out of the parking structure.

Maya caught her breath, watching the airport shrink in the rearview mirror.

"Why are you helping me?" Maya asked, eyeing his holstered weapon.

"Julian paid me a fortune to watch over you and ensure Isabella never found out who you really are," Carter explained.

Maya felt a tiny spark of hope that she actually had an ally in this nightmare.

"We need to get to a safe house before she tracks my phone," Carter said, keeping his eyes on the road.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out his encrypted radio.

Maya expected him to call his hidden loyalist team for backup.

Instead, Carter pressed the broadcast button and smiled a chilling, empty smile.

"Ms. Vance, I have the package secured, and I am bringing her to the extraction point right now."
