Chapter 1 - The Penthouse Illusion

Sebastian rode the private elevator up to the Obsidian Tower's penthouse, the faint smell of cocoa powder still lingering on his skin despite a rushed shower. He adjusted the cuffs of his off-the-rack suit—a stark contrast to the bespoke Armani his brother Oliver was currently wearing. When the elevator doors glided open, he was met with the dazzling spectacle of his own engagement dinner.
Crystal flutes clinked. The city lights of Manhattan spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a glittering backdrop for the city’s elite. And in the center of it all was Victoria.
She wore a backless emerald gown that clung to her like a second skin, her auburn hair cascading in perfect waves. She was laughing at something Oliver had just said, her hand resting lightly, perhaps a second too long, on Oliver’s forearm. Sebastian felt a cold prickle of instinct at the base of his neck.
"Darling!" Victoria gasped, finally noticing him. She glided across the marble floor, throwing her arms around his neck. Her perfume—heavy with orchids and dangerous ambition—momentarily masked the scent of vanilla that Sebastian always carried. "I was beginning to think the kitchen had swallowed you whole."
"A minor crisis with the croquembouche," Sebastian lied smoothly, kissing her cheek. "I couldn't leave the staff hanging."

Victoria offered a tight, sympathetic smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Always the dedicated employee. But tonight is about us, Sebastian. Not your... baking."
Across the room, Oliver caught Sebastian’s eye and offered a subtle, warning nod. As the night progressed, Sebastian watched his fiancé operate. She was flawless. She played the adoring, supportive partner to the 'humble chef', yet Sebastian noticed where her gaze lingered. She tracked Oliver’s every movement. She memorized the way Oliver spoke to the board members. She was charting the power dynamics of a room she believed she was about to conquer. Sebastian sipped his cheap champagne. The game was on.
