Chapter 9 - The Double Betrayal

I froze securely in my tracks, my heart sinking all the way to the bottom of my stomach.

Silas reached into my jacket pocket and snatched the keys to the Mustang.

Chloe walked toward us, a triumphant, wildly wicked smile spreading across her beautiful face.

"Good job, Silas," Chloe praised him, tossing him the heavy silver briefcase.

"Fifty thousand dollars, just exactly like we agreed."

Silas caught the briefcase and laughed loudly, leaving me completely at their mercy.

He had played me the entire time just to perfectly secure his massive payday.

"You are a terrifying monster, Chloe," I spat at her.

She simply shrugged her shoulders, admiring her perfectly manicured nails in the morning light.

"I prefer the term opportunist, Arthur."

"Now, Silas is going to put a bullet in your head, and we will toss your body right into the harbor."

Mark suddenly stepped out from the passenger side of the black Mercedes.

He looked incredibly pale and sick, holding a signed transfer deed in his shaking hands.

"Chloe, you said nobody was going to actually die," Mark pleaded weakly.

"Grow up, Mark," she snapped viciously at her husband.

"He knows way too much."

Chloe looked at Silas and gave him a single, cold nod.

Silas clicked the metal safety off the handgun.

I closed my eyes tightly, preparing to finally join my beloved Sarah.

"Do it," Chloe ordered aggressively.

A deafening gunshot echoed through the entirely empty shipyard.

I waited for the burning pain, but it completely never came.

I opened my eyes and saw Silas pointing his smoking gun directly at the sky.

He smiled at me, then pulled a small police badge from his dirty jacket pocket.

"FBI, nobody move a single muscle," Silas announced loudly.
