Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

Vance didn't even try to chase after Silas in the dark woods.

He just laughed cruelly, shoved me into the back of his cruiser, and drove me straight to the precinct.

I was thrown into a small, windowless interrogation room that smelled strongly of industrial bleach.

I sat alone at the cold metal table for hours, shivering in the freezing air conditioning.

Finally, the heavy metal door clicked open.

Mark walked into the room, looking down at his expensive Italian leather shoes.

"I am so sorry it had to come to this, Dad," he said quietly, pulling out a metal chair.

"You are no son of mine," I replied fiercely, refusing to look him in the eyes.

Mark sighed deeply and placed a thick stack of legal documents onto the table.

"The doctor evaluated you while you were waiting in here."

"He determined that you are suffering from severe dementia and are an immediate danger to yourself."

I hadn't spoken to a single doctor or nurse since I arrived at the station.

"Sign over the house and the car, and I will make sure you go to a nice nursing home," Mark promised.

"If you don't sign it, Vance will officially charge you with attempted vehicular manslaughter for almost hitting a pedestrian tonight."

They had completely boxed me into a corner with their endless web of lies.

I picked up the black pen, my hand trembling with absolute fury.

I looked at the crooked signature line, thinking about Sarah and everything we had beautifully built together.

I pressed the pen to the thick paper, ready to give up everything to save my own life.

Suddenly, the fire alarm in the precinct began to blare with a deafening, high-pitched screech.

The bright fluorescent lights in the interrogation room instantly flickered and died, plunging us into total darkness.

In the pitch black, a pair of incredibly strong hands grabbed me tightly by the collar.
