Chapter 2 - The Spare Key

I dropped the photographs onto my kitchen counter, my hands shaking violently.
My own daughter-in-law was sneaking into my locked bedroom in the middle of the night.
I needed to know why she was taking these disturbing pictures of me.
I grabbed my coat and drove the Mustang straight to Mark and Chloe's apartment.
When I knocked on their door, Mark answered with a highly guilty look on his face.
"Dad, what are you doing here?" he asked nervously.
I pushed past him and walked right into their modern living room.
Chloe was sitting on the expensive leather couch, sipping a glass of red wine.
"We told you we needed space, Arthur," she sighed dramatically.
I threw the stack of photographs onto the glass coffee table directly in front of her.
"Explain to me why you were in my locked bedroom at three in the morning," I demanded.
Mark looked at the horrifying photos and his face instantly turned pale.
Chloe didn't even flinch.
She simply smiled and took another calm sip of her wine.
"I was just checking on you, Arthur," she said sweetly.
"You've been so forgetful lately, and Mark is very worried about your declining mental health."
I realized in that exact moment what she was trying to do.
She was building a fake medical case to prove I was losing my mind.
If they successfully declared me incompetent, Mark would get legal power of attorney over my entire estate.
They would get the house, my savings, and my precious Mustang.
"I am calling the police," I warned them, pulling my cell phone out of my jacket pocket.

Mark suddenly lunged forward and snatched the phone right out of my hand.
"We can't let you do that, Dad," Mark whispered, locking the front door from the inside.
