Chapter 4 - The Standoff

Nathan stepped out of the black SUV, keeping the weapon aimed directly at Amelia’s chest.

He mocked her desperate attempt to escape, calling her utterly predictable.

Amelia positioned herself firmly between her husband and the transport cart holding her sleeping babies.

She told him he would have to kill her before he ever touched them.

Nathan scoffed, claiming he had no intention of hurting his own leverage.

He demanded that she use her phone to authorize the complete transfer of the trust into his personal holding company.

He promised to let her walk away with the babies if she surrendered the money immediately.

Amelia knew that giving him the money meant completely losing her only protection.

She slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone.

She asked Nathan if Vanessa had told him about her little visit to the hospital room.

Nathan’s arrogant expression faltered for a fraction of a second.

Amelia pressed a single button on her screen and held the phone up.

A loud, piercing alarm echoed through the concrete parking garage.

She had triggered the hospital's active shooter lockdown protocol.

Heavy steel security gates immediately began slamming down across all the garage exits.

Nathan panicked, realizing he was about to be trapped inside with a loaded weapon.

He lunged toward Amelia, desperate to grab the phone and silence the alarm.

Suddenly, a speeding dark sedan smashed violently into the side of Nathan’s SUV.

The sheer force of the impact threw Nathan backward onto the hard concrete floor.

The door of the sedan flew open, and Lucas stepped out, his face covered in bruises.

Lucas yelled for Amelia to get the babies into his car immediately.

Amelia quickly loaded the transport pods into the backseat while Lucas held Nathan at gunpoint.

They sped away just as the final security gate began to close.

Amelia finally let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for hours.

But as they merged onto the dark highway, Lucas handed her a blood-stained folder.

He told her that Nathan was not the person she needed to fear the most.

Amelia opened the folder and saw a hit contract with her name on it, signed by her own grandfather.
