Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

Vanessa took a slow, calculated step toward the hospital bed.

She confidently stated that Nathan was too soft to handle the messy details of their business arrangement.

Amelia backed away, her bare feet hitting the cold linoleum floor.

She asked Vanessa how much Nathan was paying her to commit a felony.

Vanessa laughed and said she was not doing it for money.

She revealed that she and Nathan had been legally married in Mexico five years ago, making Amelia's marriage entirely fraudulent.

The shocking revelation paralyzed Amelia for a split second.

Everything she believed about her life, her marriage, and her legal rights was built on a massive lie.

Vanessa lunged forward, aiming the needle directly at Amelia’s arm.

Adrenaline surged through Amelia’s veins as she grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher from the tray.

She swung it with all her remaining strength, shattering it against the side of Vanessa’s head.

Vanessa shrieked in pain and collapsed to the floor, dropping the syringe.

Amelia did not waste a single second looking back.

She sprinted out into the dimly lit hallway, desperate to reach the neonatal intensive care unit.

The security guard was nowhere to be seen, likely distracted by the sudden power outage.

Amelia pushed through the double doors of the NICU and found the nurses frantically checking the battery backups on the incubators.

She grabbed the head nurse and pleaded for her children’s lives, showing her the offshore payment on her phone.

The nurse recognized the corrupt doctor’s name and immediately understood the danger.

Together, they quickly transferred the three fragile babies into portable transport pods.

Amelia wheeled the cart toward the service elevator, praying the backup generator would hold.

The elevator doors opened, and they rushed inside, descending toward the underground parking garage.

Lucas was supposed to be waiting there in a secure vehicle.

The doors slid open to the dark, damp garage.

But Lucas was not in the driver's seat of the black SUV waiting for them.

Sitting behind the steering wheel, holding a suppressed pistol, was Nathan.
