Chapter 9 - The Settlement

The judge slammed her heavy wooden gavel loudly to restore immediate order in her chaotic courtroom.

She watched the federal agents forcefully escort the screaming couple out into the busy public hallway.

She then turned her attention back to the calm, collected woman standing patiently at the plaintiff's table.

"In all my years on the bench, I have never seen a divorce proceeding end with a federal raid," the judge admitted softly.

Gretchen offered a polite, weary smile, her adrenaline finally beginning to heavily crash.

The judge quickly threw out the highly fraudulent settlement agreement Joshua had meticulously drafted.

She immediately granted Gretchen sole physical and legal custody of Maxine without a single moment of hesitation.

She also awarded Gretchen the family home, her entire pension, and every single legitimate asset remaining in their joint accounts.

Gretchen walked out of the historic courthouse and breathed in the crisp, clean morning air.

For the first time in over six agonizing months, she felt completely and utterly free.

She drove straight back to the hotel and tightly embraced her beautiful, relieved daughter.

They spent the entire weekend packing up Joshua's remaining belongings and heavily donating them to a local men's shelter.

The nightmare was officially over, and the dark storm clouds over their lives had finally cleared entirely.

A few weeks later, Gretchen was sitting happily at her kitchen island, drinking hot coffee and reviewing her clean bank statements.

Joshua had been denied bail and was currently suffering terribly in a maximum-security federal holding facility.

Cheyenne had foolishly tried to strike a plea deal, but her extensive involvement in the cartel's operations guaranteed her a lengthy prison sentence.

Gretchen's beloved lawyer, Marcus, had miraculously survived the brutal attack and was steadily recovering safely in the hospital.

She was completely safe, her daughter was happy, and her hard-earned career was thriving beautifully.

The doorbell chimed softly, echoing pleasantly through the bright, peaceful house.

Gretchen walked to the front door and opened it to find a delivery courier standing quietly on the porch.

The young man handed her a thick, certified envelope bearing the official seal of her private bank.
