Chapter 3 - The Hostage Move

Gretchen stared at the glowing screen in sheer panic.
Joshua was trying to take Maxine away before the divorce was even finalized.
She immediately dialed her daughter's number.
The call went straight to a sterile voicemail recording.
She ordered the taxi driver to turn around and head back to the house.
Her maternal instinct completely overrode her profound fear of the dangerous cartel connections.
She burst through the front door of her home ten minutes later.
The house was eerily silent and completely empty.
Maxine's heavy winter coat was missing from the hallway rack.
Joshua's expensive leather travel bags were entirely gone from the bottom of the stairs.
Gretchen ran up to Maxine's bedroom and found the closet completely stripped of clothing.
A single white envelope rested perfectly in the center of the unmade bed.
Gretchen tore it open with violently trembling fingers.
The typed letter bore the official letterhead of Joshua's investment firm.
"Gretchen, Maxine and I are taking a brief vacation to the lake house," the letter read.
"I suggest you sign the settlement papers exactly as drafted by 9 AM tomorrow."
"If you cause any unnecessary legal complications, Maxine might decide she wants to live with me permanently."
It was a thinly veiled threat of abduction masquerading as a peaceful father-daughter bonding trip.
Joshua knew Gretchen would never risk losing her beloved child over money.
He was holding their daughter hostage to guarantee her signature on the fraudulent documents.
Gretchen collapsed onto the edge of the bed, sobbing uncontrollably.
She felt entirely trapped in a massive web of deceit she had never even known existed.
Then, she noticed a faint, blinking red light under Maxine's pillow.
Gretchen reached under the fabric and pulled out an old, discarded tablet.
Maxine had intentionally left it behind and activated a hidden location-sharing application.

The blue dot on the screen was not heading toward the peaceful family lake house at all.
It was moving rapidly toward a private, international airstrip on the edge of the city.
