Chapter 7 - The Cornered Prey

Gretchen gasped and dropped the folder onto the wet concrete of the parking garage.
Victor had not given her the evidence out of a mutual desire for true justice.
He had ruthlessly eliminated her only legal protection to ensure she had absolutely no choice but to follow his instructions exactly.
She gathered the scattered papers with violently shaking hands and ran all the way back to the hotel.
She barricaded the heavy wooden door with a desk chair and sat terrified on the floor until dawn.
She had no lawyer, a husband trying to ruin her, and a dangerous cartel boss pulling her strings.
But as the morning sun finally crept through the curtains, a fierce, protective anger entirely replaced her paralyzing fear.
She was a highly trained trauma nurse who spent every single day keeping people alive in the middle of bloody chaos.
She absolutely refused to let a coward like Joshua destroy her family and steal her entire future.
She dressed carefully in her sharpest navy blue business suit and tied her hair back fiercely.
She left Maxine under the strict supervision of the hotel's heavily armed private security team.
Gretchen walked directly into the grand marble lobby of the Hennepin County Courthouse at exactly 8:45 AM.
Joshua and Cheyenne were already waiting confidently outside Courtroom 4B.
Joshua smiled smugly when he saw her arrive entirely alone.
"I heard your pathetic lawyer had a terrible accident last night," Joshua mocked quietly.
"It looks like you will be representing yourself today, sweetheart."
Gretchen stared at him with an expression of absolute, terrifying calm.
"I don't need a lawyer to sign a piece of paper, Joshua," she replied smoothly.
They walked into the heavy oak doors of the courtroom as the bailiff loudly called their names.
The judge, a stern-looking woman with graying hair, instructed them to approach the heavy wooden bench.
Joshua eagerly slid the fraudulent settlement agreement directly across the table toward Gretchen.
He handed her a fancy black pen, his eyes gleaming entirely with greedy anticipation.
Gretchen picked up the pen, hovered it directly over the signature line, and paused.
"Before I sign this, Your Honor, I would like to submit a supplemental financial disclosure into the official public record," Gretchen announced clearly.
May you like
She pulled a completely different stack of documents from her briefcase and slapped them onto the desk.
Joshua's confident smile instantly vanished as he recognized the bright red logo of his own secret offshore bank.
