Chapter 7 - The Smuggler's Tunnel

The harsh red light of the emergency panel cast long, eerie shadows across the cold metal walls of the sealed vault.
The digital display clearly indicated that the automatic ventilation system had been completely destroyed in the massive explosion above.
With five terrified adults and a crying child trapped inside, the limited oxygen supply would be completely exhausted in less than thirty minutes.
Serena immediately began to hyperventilate, pacing frantically around the small room and blaming Victor for locking them in a metal coffin.
Julian quickly ordered her to sit down and stop talking, explaining that her panic was rapidly burning through their precious remaining air.
Lily sat on the cold floor, gently rocking Ethan and softly singing a lullaby to calm the child's frantic, terrified sobbing.
Victor frantically searched the massive, towering walls of safety deposit boxes, desperately trying to remember a secret his father had told him years ago.
He remembered a rumor that the original architect of the mansion had built a secret escape route for wealthy Prohibition-era bootleggers.
Victor desperately pressed his hands against the cold steel panels behind the largest row of boxes, searching for a hidden release latch.
His fingers finally brushed against a small, concealed mechanical lever completely hidden behind a fake electrical conduit.
He pulled the heavy lever with all of his remaining strength, accompanied by the loud, grinding sound of ancient gears moving.
A massive section of the solid steel wall slowly groaned and shifted backward, revealing a dark, jagged tunnel carved directly into the bedrock.
A rush of cold, damp air immediately flooded into the vault, providing a brief, beautiful moment of absolute relief for their burning lungs.
However, the immense relief was instantly destroyed by the terrifying, roaring sound of rapidly rushing water echoing from deep inside the tunnel.
Julian shined his tactical flashlight into the dark cavern, revealing that the old smuggling route was heavily flooded due to the recent coastal storms.
The icy, dark water was rapidly rising, violently surging toward the vault entrance and threatening to drown them all.

They had absolutely no choice but to enter the freezing floodwaters, as staying in the vault meant certain death by suffocation.
Victor bravely stepped into the dark water first, holding Ethan high above his head as the freezing liquid quickly rose past his waist.
