Chapter 8 - The Desperate Strike

The massive warehouse descended into absolute, breathless chaos at Clara's incredibly desperate move. Antonio panicked visibly, screaming at his confused men to hold their fire and not shoot the woman holding herself hostage. He desperately needed Clara alive because the missing ledger contained the only proof of his treacherous murders. His brief moment of complete panic was the exact window of opportunity I needed to act. I dropped to one knee and drew a small, hidden backup pistol from an ankle holster I never removed. I fired three rapid, perfectly aimed shots, instantly neutralizing the guards closest to Clara and Nora. I sprinted across the rough concrete floor, completely ignoring the bullets whizzing dangerously past my head. I tackled Antonio violently around the waist, sending us both crashing heavily into a stack of wooden shipping crates. The blue vial of the antidote flew from his hand, rolling rapidly across the floor toward the tied-up toddler. Antonio roared in pure anger, pulling a wicked, serrated hunting knife from his belt and slashing blindly at my face. I dodged the lethal blade and delivered a punishing, bone-crushing strike directly to his jaw. I scrambled away from him, diving desperately across the concrete to grab the rolling blue vial before it shattered. My fingers finally closed tightly around the cold glass, and a massive surge of relief washed over my entire body. I stood up to throw the vial to Clara so she could immediately save her dying daughter. Before I could even raise my arm, a deafening gunshot echoed from the catwalk directly above me. I felt a terrible, searing impact tear right through the center of my chest, completely stealing my breath. I stumbled backward, looking up to see Harland standing on the metal grating with a smoking sniper rifle in his hands.
