Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

I woke up slowly to the blinding, sterile lights of a private, highly secure hospital room. The steady, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard in my entire life. I turned my head slightly and saw Clara sleeping peacefully in a comfortable chair right next to my bed. Little Nora was curled up tightly against my side, completely healthy and holding a brand new stuffed bear. It took me three agonizing months of intense physical therapy to completely recover from the devastating gunshot wound. During that time, my syndicate systematically dismantled the remaining pieces of the ruthless Rossi empire forever. When I was finally strong enough to walk without a cane, I formally adopted Nora as my legal daughter. I married Clara in a small, incredibly private ceremony in the beautiful spring gardens of the rebuilt estate. I completely changed the harsh, unforgiving rules of my home, ensuring that fear was never allowed inside our walls again. We lived peacefully for two entire years, completely untouched by the violence of my former life. Everything felt absolutely perfect as we sat on the terrace one evening, watching Nora play in the warm summer grass. My head of security walked outside and handed me a small, completely unmarked black wooden box that had been left at the front gates. I opened the rusted latch and found a silver pocket watch that I had personally buried with my father twenty years ago. Resting beneath the ticking watch was a handwritten note that made the blood run completely freezing cold in my veins. The note simply read, "You took my daughter, Luca, so I am coming back from the dead to take yours."
