Chapter 1 - The Cold Reality

I wrapped a thick, warm towel around little Nora's red and trembling hands. She looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes that held far too much sadness for a three-year-old child. The freezing water dripped from the ruined white fabric of my custom shirt onto the expensive marble floor. I lifted her effortlessly into my arms, realizing instantly that she weighed almost nothing at all. I asked her to show me exactly where her mother was resting. Nora pointed a tiny, shaking finger toward the narrow servant staircase at the back of the massive estate. I carried her through the sprawling mansion that suddenly felt entirely too cold, quiet, and empty. We reached a small, dimly lit room hidden away near the laundry quarters. Clara, my quiet and notoriously hardworking housekeeper, was lying on a narrow, uncomfortable cot. Her skin was terrifyingly pale, and she was shivering violently under a thin, worn blanket. I gently set Nora down on the floor and stepped closer to the edge of the bed. Clara gasped in sheer panic when she saw the most feared man in the city standing in her private room. She tried to push herself up, desperately apologizing for her unfinished duties and begging for mercy. I placed a firm, gentle hand on her shoulder and strictly ordered her to lie back down. I could feel the immense, unnatural heat radiating from her forehead through the fabric of her uniform. Suddenly, the wooden door swung open and slammed loudly against the plaster wall. Harland, my trusted estate manager of five years, marched into the room with a disgusted scowl on his face. He did not realize I was standing quietly in the dark corner of the small servant room. Harland yelled at Clara to get out of bed immediately or he would throw her and her pathetic brat onto the freezing street. I stepped out of the shadows, and all the arrogant color instantly drained from Harland's face. He began to stammer wildly, claiming he was only trying to maintain strict discipline in my household. I told him that threatening a dangerously sick woman and manipulating a toddler was not discipline. I fired him on the spot, ordering him to pack his bags and leave my property within the hour. Harland sneered aggressively, realizing that his long years of comfortable cruelty and power were finally over. He looked me dead in the eye and laughed a cold, incredibly bitter laugh. He told me I was an absolute fool for protecting a woman I knew nothing about. Harland reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a heavy, suppressed pistol. He aimed the weapon directly at Clara's head and stated that she was a spy working for the ruthless Rossi crime syndicate.
