Chapter 3 - The Enemy Within

I ordered Doctor Evans to set up an intravenous drip to keep Clara hydrated and comfortable. I gently carried an exhausted little Nora into my private guest wing and tucked her into a massive, warm bed. I placed two of my most heavily armed guards outside her door with strict orders to shoot anyone who approached. I walked back down into the damp, freezing basement where my men had secured Harland to a metal chair. He looked up at me with a bruised, defiant smile that made my blood completely boil. I asked him how he knew Clara was connected to Antonio Rossi and the rival syndicate. Harland laughed arrogantly, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the cold concrete floor. He confessed that he had been secretly working for Antonio Rossi for the past two years. He was the one who poisoned Clara's drinking water because Antonio wanted the woman silenced slowly and painfully. I punched Harland brutally in the jaw, demanding to know why a powerful mob boss cared about a simple housekeeper. Harland gasped for air, revealing a truth that shattered my entire understanding of the situation. He told me that Clara was not a spy at all, but a former captive who had witnessed Antonio murder his own brother. Even worse, little Nora was actually Antonio's biological daughter from an affair he desperately wanted to erase. Antonio was coming to the estate to kill Clara and take the child back to groom her as his ruthless heir. I drew my weapon, fully intending to end Harland's miserable, traitorous life right there in the basement. Before I could pull the trigger, the lights in the basement flickered wildly and completely died. A massive, deafening explosion rocked the foundation of the mansion, throwing me violently against the concrete wall. The heavy blast doors of the basement groaned as the emergency lockdown system automatically engaged. My encrypted radio crackled to life with the frantic, screaming voice of my head of security. He reported that two heavily armored trucks had just smashed through the main iron gates of the estate. Dozens of Rossi soldiers were currently flooding the manicured lawns with automatic weapons and incendiary grenades. I realized with absolute horror that Harland had deliberately stalled me in the basement to give his real boss time to arrive.
