Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The courtroom was packed. My father sat directly behind me, his heavy hand resting reassuringly on my shoulder. Diane sat to my left, her legal pads perfectly aligned.
Marcus stood at the defense table. He looked small. Stripped of his tailored suits, his dad's money, and his arrogant facade, he was just a pathetic, weak man facing the consequences of his actions.
"On the count of felony domestic violence, we find the defendant, Marcus Sterling, guilty," the jury foreperson read.
Marcus squeezed his eyes shut.
"On the count of wire fraud, guilty."
"On the count of conspiracy to commit false imprisonment, guilty."
With every word, a heavy weight lifted off my chest. The invisible chains he had wrapped around my mind and my life were shattering into a million pieces.
The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for abusers, didn't hold back during sentencing.
"Marcus Sterling," she said, looking down from the bench. "You did not merely act in a moment of passion. You executed a cold, calculated, and deeply malicious plot to destroy a woman's life for your own financial gain. You weaponized the mental health system. You abused her physically and financially. I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole."
The bailiffs moved in. They grabbed Marcus's arms.

As they turned him to walk him down the center aisle, his eyes met mine one last time. There was no rage left in them. Only the horrifying realization that he had lost everything.
I didn't look away. I didn't flinch. I just watched the monster who used to sleep next to me be dragged away in chains.
