Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

By Friday, Marcus realized he was legally and financially cornered. So, he resorted to the only weapon cowards have left: public manipulation.
My phone blew up with notifications. Marcus had taken to Facebook and LinkedIn, posting a lengthy, tear-jerking manifesto.
“It breaks my heart to announce that my wife is suffering from a severe mental health crisis,” his post read. “She has become paranoid, violent, and has alienated herself from our family. She has stolen our life savings and is being manipulated by her estranged father. Please pray for her. I will not stop fighting to get my wife the psychiatric help she desperately needs.”
He attached a photo of us from our wedding day. The post was going viral. Mutual friends were leaving comments offering prayers, some even texting me asking if I was okay, implicitly believing his narrative.
"This is infuriating," I growled, slamming my laptop shut. "He's playing the victim."
"It's a classic abuser tactic," my father said calmly, pouring a cup of coffee. "DARVO. Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. He’s trying to discredit you before we go public with the lawsuit."
"We have to respond," I said.
"No," Diane intervened. "Never litigate in the court of public opinion when you hold the winning hand in a court of law. Let him post. In fact, let him keep posting. Every public statement he makes is a documented lie we will use to establish a pattern of defamation and perjury."
I took a deep breath. She was right. But I wasn't going to just sit there. If I couldn't respond publicly, I would respond digitally.

I wrote a simple, automated script. Every time Marcus or his father sent an email to my investors or board members trying to spread their lies, the script automatically replied with a single attachment: a PDF of the emergency restraining order, heavily highlighting the judge's notes citing "severe physical abuse and conspiracy."
The whispers in our social circle changed overnight.
