Chapter 5 - The Desperate Strike

A week passed. The silence from Marcus’s end was growing eerie. Diane had successfully frozen every asset tied to his name, and the divorce proceedings were moving at lightning speed due to the overwhelming evidence of domestic violence.
I needed to go back to my house to retrieve my mother’s heirloom jewelry and some physical servers for my company. I went in the middle of the day, accompanied by my father's head of security, a massive ex-Marine named Cole.
We pulled into the driveway. Everything looked quiet.
"I'll sweep the perimeter," Cole said, stepping out of the SUV. "Wait here."
I sat in the car, watching the house. Suddenly, a rock smashed through the passenger side window of the SUV, showering me in shattered glass.
I screamed, throwing my arms over my face.
The car door was ripped open. Marcus was standing there, looking feral. He hadn't shaved in days, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He had parked blocks away and waited in the bushes.
"You ruined my life!" he screamed, lunging into the car and grabbing my hair, trying to drag me out into the driveway. "I'm going to kill you!"
Before he could pull me out, Cole was there. The ex-Marine didn't say a word. He simply grabbed Marcus by the collar of his jacket and hurled him backward. Marcus hit the pavement hard, gasping for air.
Cole drew his sidearm, pointing it squarely at Marcus’s chest. "Stay exactly where you are."

I dialed 911, my hands shaking, blood trickling from a small cut on my cheek from the glass. But I wasn't terrified anymore. I felt an overwhelming sense of victory.
"You just broke a federal restraining order, assaulted me, and attempted kidnapping in broad daylight, Marcus," I said, staring down at him as the police sirens wailed in the distance. "You didn't just ruin your life. You handed it to me."
