Chapter 10 - Freedom

One Year Later.

The headquarters of my cybersecurity firm occupied the top two floors of a sleek, glass-fronted high-rise downtown. The startup had exploded in value over the last twelve months. We specialized in forensic data recovery for victims of corporate fraud and domestic financial abuse.

I used the very skills that saved my life to help other women escape theirs.

I walked out of my corner office, carrying a tablet. The bullpen was buzzing with activity. Engineers and analysts were typing furiously, tracing hidden funds and exposing digital lies.

My assistant, a bright young woman named Chloe, handed me a coffee. "Your 10:00 AM is here. It's the pro bono case. The woman whose husband is hiding assets in crypto."

"Send her in," I said.

I walked into the conference room. A woman in her late thirties sat at the table, looking terrified, exhausted, and desperately alone. She had a faint bruise on her wrist, hastily covered by a long sleeve.

I recognized that look. I had worn it for three years.

I sat down across from her and placed a fresh cup of coffee on the table. I didn't judge her. I didn't pity her.

"He told me I have nothing," the woman whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "He said if I leave, I'll be on the street. He said he erased everything."

I smiled—a calm, fiercely protective smile.

"Let me tell you a secret about men like him," I said gently, opening my laptop and spinning it around so she could see the screen. "They always think they've buried the evidence. But nothing is ever truly erased. We are going to find every dime he hid. We are going to find every lie he told. And by the time we are done, he is going to wish he had never met you."

The woman looked at me, a tiny spark of hope finally piercing through her fear.

I was no longer the victim terrified of the makeup bag on the bed. I was the architect of my own life, and I was going to make sure the monsters of the world had nowhere left to hide.

The nightmare was over. The future was mine.
