Chapter 8 - The Final Stand

Evelyn stood in the massive doorway of my home, her pristine designer clothes completely ruined by the freezing mud and rain.
Her eyes were completely wild, filled with a manic, unhinged desperation that absolutely terrified me.
She raised the heavy assault rifle, completely ignoring the chaotic shouting of the federal agents rushing up the driveway behind her.
She screamed that if she was going to spend the rest of her life in federal prison, she was absolutely taking us to hell with her.
I did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
I tackled Mariana violently to the floor just as a deafening burst of automatic gunfire tore through the expensive living room.
Heavy bullets completely shredded the custom leather sofa where we had been sitting mere seconds before.
Crystal vases shattered, and expensive artwork was violently ripped from the walls as my mother blindly sprayed the room.
I covered Mariana with my own body, completely terrified that one of the stray bullets would find us in the chaos.
The federal agents outside finally returned fire, shooting out the massive front windows to gain a tactical advantage.
Evelyn was forced to stop shooting and dive behind a heavy marble pillar to avoid the incoming barrage of police bullets.
The brief pause in gunfire gave me the terrifying opportunity I desperately needed.
I grabbed Mariana's hand and dragged her furiously toward the heavy oak doors leading down to the wine cellar.
We scrambled down the dark, narrow stone steps just as another wave of deafening gunfire erupted above us.
I slammed the heavy wooden door shut and locked the massive iron deadbolt from the inside, sealing us in the dark.
The wine cellar was completely silent, insulated entirely from the chaotic violence tearing my beautiful house apart upstairs.
Mariana was shaking uncontrollably, crying quietly into my shoulder as we hid behind a massive rack of expensive wine.
I held her incredibly tight, promising her that the reinforced door would absolutely hold until the police secured the building.
We waited in the suffocating darkness for what felt like an absolute eternity, jumping at every muffled crash from above.
Finally, the deafening sound of gunfire completely ceased, replaced entirely by the harsh, commanding shouts of federal agents.
I heard heavy boots walking slowly down the stone steps toward the cellar door.
A loud, authoritative voice called out my name, identifying himself as the lead tactical commander of the FBI.
He stated that the immediate threat was completely neutralized and we were entirely safe to come out.
I slowly unlocked the heavy iron deadbolt and pushed the oak door open, stepping cautiously into the bright tactical lights.
The agents quickly escorted us up the stairs and out the front doors, completely shielding our eyes from the horrific scene in the foyer.
I caught a brief glimpse of my mother lying completely motionless on the marble floor, surrounded by a massive pool of dark blood.
She had ultimately refused to surrender, forcing the federal agents to violently end her terrifying reign of absolute madness.
We were loaded quickly into the back of an armored medical transport and driven far away from the ruined estate.
I held Mariana's hand the entire ride, knowing the toxic, violent legacy of my family was finally, permanently broken.
As we sat in the quiet hospital waiting room, my phone suddenly vibrated with a message from an unknown, restricted number.

I opened the text, and my blood instantly turned entirely to ice.
"Evelyn was just a distraction, Julian. Check the trunk of your car."
