Chapter 2 - The Audit

The entire dining room went completely silent as Mariana walked gracefully toward the head of the table.
She did not look like the exhausted, terrified woman I had seen clutching spare change at the market.
She stood tall, completely ignoring the shocked stares of my mother and her wealthy friends.
Evelyn's fake smile vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of cold, seething anger.
"Mariana," Evelyn hissed quietly, "I explicitly told you to eat in the kitchen this morning."
Mariana slammed the heavy legal binder down onto the polished mahogany table with a deafening thud.
She looked directly into my mother's eyes and offered a smile that was absolutely chilling.
"I decided I prefer the view from my own dining room, Evelyn," Mariana replied smoothly.
I stood frozen near the entryway, entirely captivated by the sudden, terrifying shift in my wife's demeanor.
Chloe scoffed loudly and crossed her arms. "You don't own anything here, Mariana. Julian bought this house."
Mariana casually flipped the heavy binder open, revealing hundreds of meticulously organized financial documents.
She pulled out a certified bank statement and slid it across the smooth table toward Chloe.
"You are absolutely right, Chloe," Mariana stated calmly. "Julian did buy this beautiful house."
Mariana then pulled out a second document, this one bearing an official government seal.
"However, Julian specifically structured the purchasing trust under a joint holding company."
She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at a highlighted paragraph near the bottom of the page.
"And as of yesterday afternoon, I officially own exactly fifty-one percent of that holding company."
Evelyn turned completely pale, violently snatching the document from the table to read it herself.
I felt a sudden, massive surge of pride and sheer amazement wash over me.
While my mother and sister were busy stealing her grocery money, Mariana had been executing a brilliant legal maneuver.
Evelyn threw the paper down and glared at me. "Julian! Did you authorize this theft?"
I finally stepped forward, moving to stand firmly by Mariana's side.
"I didn't authorize anything," I stated coldly. "Because Mariana doesn't need my permission to run her own company."
The wealthy friends sitting at the table began murmuring nervously, realizing they were witnessing a violent family implosion.
Chloe panicked, grabbing her expensive designer purse. "This is completely illegal! You can't just steal our house!"
Mariana laughed softly, a genuine sound of amusement that I hadn't heard in months.
She reached into the binder and pulled out a thick stack of printed email correspondence.
"I didn't steal anything, Chloe," Mariana explained. "But I did just hire a forensic accountant to audit the household accounts."
Mariana dropped the emails onto the table, directly in front of my mother.
"The audit easily tracked the forty-five thousand dollars you illegally transferred into Chloe's private bank account."
Evelyn staggered backward as if she had just been physically struck.
Mariana leaned forward, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper.
"So, Evelyn, you have exactly one hour to pack your bags and vacate my property before I call the police for felony embezzlement."
My mother stared at Mariana in absolute shock, finally realizing she had been completely outplayed.
But then, Evelyn smiled a dark, incredibly twisted smile that made my blood run entirely cold.

She looked directly at me and pulled a small, silver flash drive from her pocket.
"Go ahead and call the police, Mariana," Evelyn taunted. "But I think Julian needs to see what's on this drive first."
