Chapter 5 - The Stalking Shadows

I stared at the partially burned life insurance policy in absolute, paralyzing horror.

My mother had not just planned to starve Mariana out of the house or ruin her reputation with fake scandals.

Evelyn had actually taken out a massive financial bet entirely predicated on my wife dying in the very near future.

I handed the chilling document to the lead detective, completely abandoning any remaining shred of loyalty to my twisted family.

The detective immediately escalated the case from corporate fraud to a highly dangerous, active conspiracy to commit murder.

He placed two armed, uniformed officers at the front gate of the estate and ordered us not to leave the property alone.

I spent the next forty-eight hours completely reinforcing the house, upgrading the security cameras, and hiring private bodyguards.

Mariana sat quietly in the library, desperately trying to reconstruct the burned financial ledgers from her encrypted laptop backups.

The massive house felt incredibly empty and suffocating, completely overshadowed by the looming threat of my mother's inevitable return.

On the third night, a violent thunderstorm rolled across the Austin hills, knocking out the power to the entire neighborhood.

The massive estate was plunged into total darkness, illuminated only by the brief, terrifying flashes of lightning outside.

The backup generator miraculously failed to kick on, leaving the high-tech security cameras completely useless.

I grabbed a heavy tactical flashlight and a loaded pistol from my safe, ordering Mariana to stay locked inside the master bedroom.

I quietly crept down the grand staircase, sweeping the beam of my flashlight across the dark, silent living room.

The heavy rain battered violently against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, completely masking any subtle noises inside the house.

I checked the front doors and found the heavy deadbolts perfectly secure and entirely uncompromised.

I moved slowly toward the back of the house, heading for the tiny maid's quarters where Mariana had been forced to live.

As I turned the corner into the narrow hallway, I noticed a large puddle of muddy water spreading across the expensive hardwood floor.

Someone had forced the utility door open from the outside, leaving thick, muddy footprints tracking directly into the kitchen.

My heart pounded furiously as I raised my weapon, sweeping the flashlight beam across the dark, empty kitchen islands.

The back door leading to the utility storage room was swaying slightly on its hinges, letting the freezing rain pour inside.

I slowly pushed the door fully open, expecting to find an armed intruder hiding in the dark shadows of the storage room.

Instead, I found the two private bodyguards I had hired lying completely unconscious on the cold concrete floor.

Someone had slipped powerful sedatives into the coffee thermoses they kept near the side entrance.

I immediately raised my radio to call the police officers stationed at the front gate for backup.

The radio merely crackled with thick, heavy static; a localized signal jammer was completely blocking all outgoing transmissions.

I turned around to sprint back to the master bedroom to protect Mariana, but I was a terrifying second too late.

A massive, heavy figure stepped out from the shadows of the pantry and struck me violently across the back of the head.

May you like

I collapsed onto the kitchen floor, my vision blurring into darkness as the heavy flashlight rolled away from my hand.

Before I completely lost consciousness, I heard the sound of heavy boots walking purposefully up the grand staircase toward my wife.
