Chapter 1 - The Invisible Wife

I remained completely hidden in the dark hallway outside the tiny maid's quarters.

My mother's cruel laugh echoed sharply against the expensive marble floors of my home.

I watched Mariana sit silently on the edge of the cheap cot, refusing to let Evelyn see her cry.

I had spent my entire adult life building a massive empire so my family would never have to struggle.

Instead, my absence had turned my own house into a terrifying prison for the woman I loved.

I quietly slipped out through the utility door and walked back to my car parked two streets away.

I sat behind the steering wheel in the freezing dark, my hands shaking with absolute fury.

I wanted to kick the front doors open right then and throw my mother and sister out onto the lawn.

But Mariana's cryptic words kept replaying in my mind.

She was clearly hiding a secret plan, and I needed to know exactly what she was waiting for.

I pulled out my laptop and logged into our shared household banking application.

I stared at the screen in complete disbelief as the digital numbers finally loaded.

The joint checking account, which usually held nearly fifty thousand dollars for living expenses, was completely empty.

Every single cent had been aggressively transferred into a private account entirely under Chloe's name.

My mother and sister had literally starved my wife out of her own bank accounts while I was traveling.

I spent the rest of the night parked under a dim streetlight, methodically reviewing the security camera footage from my home.

I watched five months of pure psychological torture unfold in high definition on my screen.

I saw Chloe routinely locking Mariana out of the main house during the freezing rain.

I watched my mother systematically throw away every single photograph of Mariana from the living room walls.

By the time the sun began to rise over Austin, I had a terrifying, crystal-clear picture of what had happened.

They had isolated her, stolen her money, and completely erased her from the family.

At 7:45 AM, I saw three luxury cars pull into my massive circular driveway.

Several of my mother’s wealthy, gossiping friends stepped out, carrying expensive pastries and coffee.

They were arriving for the extravagant family breakfast my mother had mentioned the night before.

I decided it was finally time to make my unexpected return to the estate.

I walked up the driveway and entered the grand foyer just as the caterers were setting up the buffet.

Laughter and the clinking of expensive crystal echoed from the massive formal dining room.

I walked into the room, wearing the exact same wrinkled suit I had worn on my flight.

My mother froze mid-sentence, dropping a silver serving spoon onto the polished mahogany table.

Chloe gasped loudly, almost spilling her mimosa down the front of her expensive silk blouse.

"Julian!" Evelyn cried out, forcing a bright, painfully fake smile onto her face.

She rushed forward to hug me, claiming she had absolutely no idea I was coming home early.

I did not return the hug.

I looked directly past her and asked a single, terrifyingly calm question.

"Where is my wife?"

Chloe stammered nervously, glancing at the heavy wooden doors leading to the kitchen.

Before anyone could answer, the heavy double doors slowly swung open.

Mariana stepped into the elegant dining room, but she was not wearing the clothes from the tiny room.

She was wearing a stunning, custom-tailored white designer suit, and holding a thick, official legal binder.
