Chapter 5 - The Federal Interrogation

The FBI agent introduced himself as Special Agent Miller, a man with a voice as cold as ice.
He ordered two heavily armed tactical officers to escort Maria and Oliver into a private holding room down the hall.
Maria held Oliver’s hand tightly, absolutely terrified that this new authority figure was going to separate them.
Agent Miller sat across from them at a cold metal table, dropping a massive file folder onto the surface.
He explained that the FBI had been secretly investigating Charles Whitmore’s offshore accounts for over five years.
The arson at the country estate was not just about collecting a massive insurance payout.
Charles had hidden a heavily encrypted server in the east wing that contained proof of international money laundering.
The fire was specifically designed to completely destroy the server before the federal government could raid the property.
Maria asked why Charles would intentionally lock Oliver in the bedroom if the main goal was destroying a computer.
Agent Miller sighed heavily, rubbing his temples as if the pure evil of the situation exhausted him.
He revealed that Oliver’s trust fund was the only clean, untraceable money Charles had left to rebuild his empire.
Murdering his own adopted son was simply a convenient, ruthless bonus to his financial cover-up.
Oliver squeezed Maria’s hand, completely traumatized by the absolute cruelty of the man he had called father.
Agent Miller looked softly at the young boy, assuring him that Charles would never be able to hurt him again.
He then turned his sharp gaze back to Maria, his expression becoming incredibly serious and unreadable.
He stated that the federal government needed Maria’s full cooperation to completely dismantle the Whitmore criminal network.
In exchange for her help, the FBI would expedite the legal process to formally recognize her as Oliver’s biological mother.
Maria wept tears of profound joy, nodding her head vigorously to accept the agent’s generous offer.
She promised to tell them everything she had witnessed during her twelve years working in that terrifying mansion.
She remembered secret midnight meetings, hidden wall safes, and the names of corrupt politicians who visited the estate.
Agent Miller smiled in satisfaction, writing down every single detail she provided with meticulous care.
He assured her that the nightmare was finally over and that she and her son would be placed in witness protection.
Just as they were preparing to leave the holding room, a loud, frantic pounding echoed on the metal door.

A junior FBI agent burst into the room, his face completely pale and his chest heaving with exertion.
He reported that the transport van carrying Charles Whitmore to the federal holding facility had just been violently ambushed.
