Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

I froze in the damp tunnel.
The gunshot had come from the main living room.
I scrambled up the next access ladder like a woman possessed.
I kicked the heavy brass floor vent open and climbed into the living room.
The scene in front of me was pure chaos.
Vanessa was lying on the expensive Persian rug, bleeding from a wound in her shoulder.
Julian stood over her with smoking gun in his hand.
"You became a liability, Vanessa," Julian said coldly.
Julian turned toward the grand balcony overlooking the rocky cliffs of the estate.
Greg was standing on the very edge of the stone railing.
He was holding Lily by the collar of her dress over a hundred-foot drop.
Greg looked completely unhinged.
"You promised me a million dollars for helping you, Julian!"
"Wire it right now, or I drop the brat into the ocean!"
Julian laughed cruelly.
"I don't care about the kid."
"Drop her."
My entire world stopped spinning.
I let out a guttural scream and grabbed a heavy iron fire poker from the hearth.
I did not think about the gun in Julian's hand.
I did not think about my own life.
May you like
I sprinted blindly toward the open balcony doors.
Julian raised his weapon to shoot me right between the eyes.
