Chapter 2 - The Unseen Enemy
Two uniformed police officers rushed into the room with their hands on their holsters.
Marcus calmly stepped in front of me.
"Officers, there is a massive misunderstanding here."
The taller officer glared at Marcus.
"We have digital evidence linking this woman to federal wire fraud."
"Step aside, Mr. Cole."
Marcus did not move a single inch.
"My security system was hacked by a third party."
"I have my cyber team pulling the real IP logs as we speak."
"If you arrest her now, the real thief will flee the country."
The officers exchanged an uncertain look.
Marcus pulled out his phone and dialed the police commissioner.
He walked into the hallway to negotiate, leaving the door cracked open.
I stood trembling in the corner of the room.
Lily buried her small face into my shoulder.
"Mommy, I am scared."
I kissed her forehead.
"Everything is going to be okay, sweetie."
A shadow moved across the threshold.
Marta, the strict house manager, stepped silently into the security room.
Her usually stern face was completely devoid of emotion.
She walked directly toward me.
Before I could speak, she pulled a heavy black pistol from the pocket of her apron.

"Keep your mouth completely shut, or the child dies right here."
