Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The blinding beams of tactical flashlights cut harshly through the pouring rain.
Lorenzo stood firmly in front of Clara and Mia, using his massive body as a human shield.
He raised his shotgun and prepared to fight to the absolute bitter end of his life.
"Drop the weapon, Lorenzo, and I will make your death quick," Giorgio's voice called out from the dark.
Giorgio stepped out from the tree line, holding an umbrella and looking completely unharmed.
Lorenzo laughed bitterly, refusing to surrender his weapon to a coward.
"You were always a pathetic snake, Giorgio," Lorenzo spat furiously into the storm.
Giorgio frowned and raised a suppressed pistol, aiming it directly at Lorenzo's head.
Before Giorgio could pull the trigger, the terrifying roar of a high-powered engine shattered the night.
A massive, heavily armored black SUV crashed violently through the stone perimeter wall.
The vehicle smashed directly into Giorgio's line of mercenaries, sending heavily armed men flying into the mud.
The tinted window rolled down, revealing the fiercely loyal face of Lorenzo's personal driver, Marco.
Marco had supposedly been killed three weeks ago, but he was very much alive and heavily armed.
Marco threw a massive assault rifle out the window directly into Lorenzo's waiting hands.
"Get in the car, boss!" Marco screamed over the deafening sound of automatic gunfire.
Lorenzo unleashed a hail of suppressing fire, forcing Giorgio and his surviving men to take cover.
Clara dragged Mia through the deep mud and scrambled into the back seat of the armored SUV.
Lorenzo jumped into the passenger seat and slammed the heavy door shut behind him.
Marco slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, tearing across the ruined lawn toward the main gates.
Bullets rained relentlessly against the bulletproof glass, leaving deep, terrifying spiderweb cracks in the windows.
They completely smashed through the heavy iron front gates of the estate, bending the metal out into the street.
They sped away into the dark, winding mountain roads, leaving the burning mansion far behind them.

Clara hugged her crying daughter tightly, sobbing tears of pure joy and absolute relief.
They had finally escaped the horrific nightmare, and they were completely safe at last.
