Chapter 10 - The False Sunrise

The armored SUV raced down the empty highway as the first pale light of dawn broke over the horizon.
Lorenzo sat in the passenger seat, breathing heavily and checking his remaining ammunition.
Marco drove with flawless precision, navigating the dangerous wet roads without a single error.
Clara gently stroked Mia's wet hair, humming the soft, familiar melody of "You Are My Sunshine."
The little girl finally fell into an exhausted, peaceful sleep against her mother's shoulder.
They had successfully defeated a massive criminal empire and survived an impossible, deadly siege.
Lorenzo looked back at Clara and offered her a genuinely warm, deeply grateful smile.
"I owe you my life, Clara," Lorenzo said softly, his voice full of undeniable sincerity.
"I will make sure you and your daughter never have to worry about money or safety ever again."
Clara smiled back through her tears, finally feeling the crushing weight of her tragic life lifting away.
She reached into her soaked pocket to pull out a dry tissue for her muddy face.
As she pulled her hand out, a small, silver locket snagged on the fabric and fell onto the floorboards.
The delicate locket popped open upon impact, revealing a small, folded photograph hidden inside.
Lorenzo leaned over and politely picked up the silver necklace to hand it back to her.
His eyes casually glanced at the tiny photograph of Clara's deceased husband, James.
Lorenzo completely froze, the warm gratitude instantly vanishing from his cold, dark eyes.

He slowly raised his heavy pistol and pressed the hot barrel directly against the center of Clara's forehead.
"Why do you have a picture of the hitman who shot me and put me in that coma?" Lorenzo whispered.
