Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Plate

Total chaos erupted in the dining room as the children screamed in terror.
Leonardo moved with terrifying speed, pulling his gun and shielding his youngest children behind his broad body.
He ordered his men to lock down every single exit in the estate.
He turned his lethal gaze toward Abigail, his eyes filled with absolute betrayal.
He accused her of poisoning the cake to finish the hit her father had ordered.
Abigail dropped to her knees beside the convulsing security guard.
She yelled that the guard had not eaten a single piece of the cake.
She pointed to the spilled cup of dark coffee soaking into the expensive Persian rug.
Abigail recognized the distinct smell of bitter almonds rising from the steaming liquid.
She grabbed a pitcher of milk from the table and forced the dying guard to drink it to slow the cyanide absorption.
She yelled at Leonardo to call for the underground medical team immediately.
Leonardo watched her desperately fight to save his man's life.
He realized a true assassin would never risk her own cover to save a low-level guard.
The medical team rushed in and stabilized the guard just in time.
Leonardo grabbed Abigail by the arm and pulled her into his private study.
He demanded to know who had laced the coffee if she was innocent.
Abigail closed her eyes and visualized the kitchen staff moving around her during the chaotic afternoon.
She remembered the head chef replacing the coffee pot near the staff entrance just before dinner.
She opened her eyes and told Leonardo that his most trusted chef was the traitor.
Leonardo pulled up the security footage on his encrypted computer monitor.

The screen showed the kitchen exit door swinging open wildly into the snowy night.
The head chef was already gone, and he had taken ten-year-old Theo with him.
