Chapter 8 - The Highway to Hell

Khloe climbed slowly into the back seat of the heavy SUV, her heart hammering violently against her bruised ribs.
Roman sat confidently in the front passenger seat while Marcus drove them quickly out of the dark, abandoned garage.
Khloe knew she had to warn Roman immediately before Marcus drove them directly into a carefully planned, deadly ambush.
She leaned forward, subtly tapping Roman's broad shoulder, and secretly traced a specific emergency danger code on his jacket with her finger.
It was the exact same tapping code she used at the office to warn him when federal regulators were waiting in the lobby.
Roman stiffened almost imperceptibly, instantly understanding the silent message that the man sitting next to him was a lethal traitor.
Roman casually turned his head and asked Marcus why he chose this specific, isolated route completely out of the city.
Marcus smiled a tight, nervous smile and claimed it was the absolute only way to avoid the massive police barricades.
Without a single moment of hesitation, Roman drew his heavy weapon and shot Marcus point-blank in the right leg.
Marcus screamed in sheer agony and violently lost control of the heavy, speeding vehicle.
The armored SUV swerved wildly across the wet, slick highway and crashed brutally into a solid concrete barrier.
The airbags deployed with a deafening crack, instantly filling the enclosed cabin with thick, choking white smoke.
Roman aggressively kicked his jammed door open and dragged a bleeding, dazed Khloe out of the completely wrecked car.

They stumbled weakly onto the empty highway, desperately trying to catch their breath in the freezing rain.
Suddenly, the blinding headlights of five black sedans illuminated the dark road, completely surrounding them in the dead of night.
