Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Dominic froze entirely in the back seat, completely shocked by the lethal weapon pressed aggressively against his skull.
Khloe did not hesitate, nor did she show a single ounce of fear in her dark, determined eyes.
She calmly ordered the terrified driver to slam heavily on the brakes and abandon the running vehicle immediately.
The driver complied without question, skidding the heavy car to a violent halt and running away into the dark, wet woods.
Khloe kicked Dominic out of the car into the mud, leaving the powerful crime boss completely humiliated and stranded on the side of the road.
She climbed over the center console, took the wheel, and sped aggressively back to the crash site where Roman was still fighting for his life.
Roman watched in sheer, absolute disbelief as Khloe ran over two of Valente's remaining gunmen with the heavy, black sedan.
He climbed weakly into the passenger seat, bleeding profusely but smiling at her with absolute, dangerous pride.
They escaped together into the rainy night, having successfully survived the impossible, deadly ambush against all odds.
Roman patched his bleeding wound in the car and pulled Khloe into a fierce, deeply passionate kiss that promised a lifetime of protection.
They held each other tightly, completely believing they had finally defeated the monsters hunting them and secured their freedom.
They drove directly to the heavily guarded private medical facility to check on Khloe's sick mother and share the victorious news.
Khloe walked happily into the luxurious hospital suite, eager to tell her mother the terrifying nightmare was finally over forever.
She stopped dead in her tracks, her warm blood turning to absolute, paralyzing ice in her veins.
The expensive hospital bed was completely empty, showing absolutely no signs of a struggle.
Resting perfectly on the center of the crisp white pillow were Khloe's old tortoiseshell glasses and a folded, handwritten note.

The chilling note was written perfectly in her sick mother's distinct, familiar handwriting.
It read, "You shouldn't have brought the monster to my door, Khloe, because I am the one who hired Valente to kill him."
