Chapter 6 - The Setup

Victor ordered his most trusted men to quietly remove the housekeeper's body from the estate.

He needed the hidden traitor to believe their assassination attempt had completely failed.

To draw out the true mole, Victor devised a highly dangerous psychological trap.

He publicly announced to his staff that he no longer trusted Chloe and was sending her away.

He forcefully ordered Chloe to pack her bags, speaking harshly to her in front of the guards.

It broke her heart to play along, even though she knew it was a carefully orchestrated lie.

Victor secretly moved her and Tommy into a hidden safe room located behind his massive library.

The secret room was filled with security monitors displaying every single hallway in the entire mansion.

"We watch the cameras until the traitor tries to contact the Morettis," Victor explained quietly.

For two long days, they sat closely together in the dark room, watching the glowing screens.

During the quiet hours, Chloe found herself heavily distracted by his proximity.

She noticed the small scar on his chin and the way his jaw tightened when he was deeply thinking.

On the third night, Victor fell asleep in the chair, completely exhausted from his slow recovery.

Chloe quietly slipped out of the safe room to retrieve more medical supplies for Tommy.

She successfully sneaked into Victor's main office, intending to quickly grab the first-aid kit.

However, a bright red, heavily classified folder sitting openly on his desk caught her immediate attention.

The folder had her family's last name clearly printed in bold black ink across the front cover.

She opened the file with trembling hands and began reading the highly detailed investigative reports inside.

The documents contained crime scene photos of the car crash that killed her parents five years ago.

She read the official police report stating a random drunk driver was entirely at fault.

Then, she found a secondary, highly secret mafia report securely stapled to the back page.

The horrific truth hit her like a massive, physical blow to the stomach.

The driver was not drunk at all; he was a highly trained hitman working directly for Dante Moretti.

Worse still, her father had apparently owed Dante a massive sum of stolen money.

Chloe dropped the heavy folder onto the floor, her entire world shattering into a million pieces.

She spun around quickly to run away, only to find Victor standing silently in the doorway.

"You were never supposed to see those files, Chloe," he whispered with a look of pure agony.
